This position will function as a Lead Public Health Laboratory Scientist to subordinate Public Health Laboratory Scientist(s) in the Molecular Epidemiology- ARLN Unit of the Division of Molecular Biology. This position oversees technical accuracy and reliability of various real-time nucleic acid amplification platforms to test viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens including but not limited to SARS-CoV-2, Noroviruses, CREs, C. Auris and other infectious agents of public health importance. This position will assign and review work, cross-train existing and new scientists in various methodologies and troubleshoot technical problems related to the assays and instrumentation. This position interprets and reports the results of testing to Epidemiologists/ submitters. This position will assist the Molecular Epidemiology-ARLN Supervisor in efforts implementing and sustaining new workflows, and continue to support and/or improve existing processes and quality assurance procedures used in public health programs. This position is also responsible for working closely with the federal and state laboratories to prepare responses to program audits, conduct outbreak investigations, and provide guidance for submission of specimens for specialized testing. This work is performed as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable/ infectious diseases.

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or three years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional graduate education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
