Introduction

The State of Maryland – Maryland Department of Health is seeking Social Work professionals to fill positions in health care settings as a Social Worker II, Health Services (full performance level) or a Social Worker I, Health Services (intermediate level).

GRADE

Grade 17:  Social Worker II, Health Services, $70,743 - $110,288/year
Grade 16:  Social Worker I, Health Services, $66,314 - $103,309/year

LOCATION OF POSITION

This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies across the state of Maryland. When completing the application, select all the locations at which you are willing to work.

POSITION DUTIES

Social Worker II, Health Services is classified as the full performance level work.  Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a Social Work Supervisor, Social Work Program Administrator or Social Work Manager, Health Services or general supervision from a Program Director.

Social Worker I, Health Services is classified as intermediate level work.  Employees in this classification operate under closed supervision at times and under general supervision at times depending upon the complexity of the specific duty being performed.

Neither of these levels supervises other positions and the position duties for both levels of Social Worker, Health Services include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing direct social work services within a health care setting to clients in a special population, such as chronically ill, geriatric, maternity, family planning, adolescents or substance abusers, persons with behavioral health diagnoses, or physical or developmental disabilities;
  • Evaluating case situations and presents information to other members of the health care team on clients’ families and social background pertinent to diagnosis and treatment; 
  • Interviewing clients and family members to determine nature and degree of problems and arranges, as necessary, medical or psychiatric examinations to help identify problems pertinent to diagnosis and treatment; 
  • Determining if a crisis situation exists and, if it does, immediately initiating appropriate intervention techniques; 
  • Interpreting psychiatric and other health care treatments to clients or families and helping with personal and environmental difficulties which interfere with obtaining maximum benefit from that care; 
  • Working with other members of a multi-disciplinary health care team to further their understanding of social and emotional factors underlying the client’s health problems; 
  • Helping clients to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing self-understanding; 
  • Helping clients to respond constructively to treatment and assisting in adjustment leading to and following the completion of treatment;
  • Working in close cooperation with public and private organizations to provide a plan of service to assist clients in achieving optimum social and health adjustments within the clients' capacity; 
  • Providing therapeutic counseling as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team; 
  • Serving as the link between client, medical facility and the community; 
  • May develop, within a multi-disciplinary health care team, individual treatment programs for assigned clients;
  • May act as a mentor providing advice and guidance to Casework Specialists, social work interns and social work students; 
  • Performing other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Social Worker II, Health Services

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers. 

Experience: Two years of experience rendering clinical social work services in a health care or treatment setting subsequent to the receipt of an approved Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university. 

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or Social Work specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 

Social Worker I, Health Services

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

Experience: None.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the selective qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Most recent job experience is (or was) with the US Federal Government or Maryland State Government, defined as AT LEAST ONE of the below:
  • Currently employed with the US Federal Government;
  • Separated from the US Federal Government after January 15, 2025, with or without other employment since;
  • Currently employed with the Maryland State Government.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to Maryland State residents.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Social Worker II, Health Services

1. Candidates must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker, Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Maryland Department of Health Testing Unit.

2. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Social Worker I, Health Services

1. Candidates must be licensed as a Graduate Social Worker (on or by June 30, 2018), Master Social Worker (on or after July 1, 2018) or Certified Social Worker by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Maryland Department of Health Testing Unit.

2. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
