Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Rangers at Fort Frederick State Park Complex, which includes the Western Maryland Rail Trail, Woodmont Natural Resource Management Area and Fort Frederick State Park located in Big Pool, Maryland (Washington County). Seasonal Rangers work with full-time staff to operate and maintain state parks. Typical duties include: Provide visitor services, assist in historic and environmental education presentations/ programs, assist with special events, monitor day-use areas, campgrounds and trails, register campers, provide visitor information, advise public of park rules/regulations, open/close areas and gates, pick-up litter, clean vehicles, maintain equipment, write report, collect data, clean and maintain public restrooms, operate computer and cash register, verify receipts, maintain hiking and biking trails, staff nature center, work with school groups, provide nature programs to visitors and other duties as assigned. Applicants must be able to lift 25lbs., work independently in remote areas, hike and bike trails of varying difficulty, and work outdoors in all weather conditions. The shift hours for this position vary from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Total weekly hours will vary seasonally. Applicants must be available to work varying shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent or currently enrolled in High School.

Experience:  Education or experience in the field of park operations, recreation, education, forestry, social sciences, or natural resources is preferred, but not required.

Notes:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old. 
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. 
  • Applicants must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions. 
  • Applicants must adhere to all State and Federal laws, safety regulations, and must understand and adhere to all park policies.  
  • Applicant must present a neat and clean appearance and wear issued uniform correctly.
  • Contract start and end dates are flexible and subject to change.
