Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland Park Service is currently accepting applications for head lifeguards for Gunpowder Falls State Park in Baltimore County. The Head Lifeguard holds an important leadership position in the Maryland Park Service. He/she ensures smooth daily operation of the beach facility by coordinating training, scheduling, safety checks, and serving as the first line supervisor of the Lifeguard team. The Head Lifeguard has additional responsibilities beyond the general lifeguarding responsibilities, and therefore should be an experienced lifeguard with the ability to instruct, assign, supervise, and evaluate the lifeguards in the performance of their duties. He/she will lead daily physical and skills trainings, create and assign the daily rotation, delegate tasks and responsibilities, ensure facility is clean, safe and prepared for an emergency, maintain first aid supplies and inform the beach manager of any shortages or needs, and be a positive role model for the lifeguard team. Lifeguards perform public safety work at the state park swimming areas. Lifeguards are responsible for protecting human life and maintaining order. They patrol and survey the swimming areas to prevent swimmers from endangering themselves and/or others. Work involves informing the public of the swimming and state park regulations, rescuing swimmers in distress, searching for possible drowning victims, and administering first aid to the injured. The position may also involve related maintenance and custodial duties or other duties as assigned. Lifeguards generally work an eight-hour shift between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. including weekends and holidays. Hours may vary.
MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Education: Applicants must posses certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid, American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, or approved equivalent
Experience: At least two years of lifeguarding experience is preferred.
Notes:
- Applicants must have a driver’s license (or certified to meet minimum vision standard for a driver’s license by a doctor).
- Applicants must be capable of hearing a whistle blast or radio transmission in a noisy beach environment.
- Applicants must successfully pass pre-employment testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills, including an endurance swim of 500 meters in 15 minutes and an active victim rescue from 25 meters.
- Additional training exceeding the minimum qualifications will be provided
