The main purpose of this job is to serve as Supervisor of the Trace Metals Laboratory, which is comprised of the Environmental Metals and Bioanalytical Metals Sections.  The Trace Metals Lab is involved in the testing of toxic metals in multi-media environmental samples, human urine and blood, food and consumer products.  These tests are conducted using approved analytical methods in support of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Superfund, ISO-17025, COMAR regulations, CDC and FDA initiatives.  Testing is performed on samples/specimens submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland and the environment. The successful applicant should have knowledge of environmental testing technologies and methods, methods to support food testing and human biomonitoring, strong background in quality assurance procedures; and experience in writing and modifying standard operating procedures, and demonstrated skills in supervision.

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or four years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Note:

1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
