Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, is currently accepting applications for a long-term contractual Park Services Associate I (Park Ranger) position at Bohemia River State Park in Chesapeake City, Maryland (Cecil County). Bohemia River State Park is managed by staff of Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area (NRMA), located approximately 20 miles away.

This position will assist the Park Manager and Assistant Park Manager in support of the development of an interim public access plan and strategic management plan for this new facility. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the overall operation of park facilities, and provide site supervision, instruction and problem resolution to seasonal staff and volunteers. Duties include but are not limited to: natural resource assessment and planning, collaboration with partner organizations and stakeholders, project management, visitor services, communicating established procedures and policies to the visiting public, interpretive services, trail design, general ground and facility maintenance and monitoring the physical condition of recreational facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation of the park, as well as the preservation of their natural, cultural and historical resources. Fiscal duties include grants administration, developing budgets and monitoring expenses and revenue, and collection and processing of state park revenues.

Please note: The selected candidate will be required to work weekends, evenings and holidays.


For education obtained outside of the United States (U.S.), you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the U.S., please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at prior to hire.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences, history or a natural resources or history related field.  

Experience: One year of experience in forest or park management, recreation, or natural resources management, or preparing, developing or delivering programs that interpret natural, historical, cultural or recreational features.


1. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of park management, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences or a natural resources related field for one year of the required experience.  

2. Candidates may substitute experience in park management, recreation or a natural or cultural resources related field on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in management and program clerical and assistance classification or management and program clerical and assistance specialty codes in the general, administrative, clerical, and office services field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

• Experience in State Park operations

• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

• Experience in planning, mapping and/or environmental assessment

• Experience in project management

• Experience working with community and government agency partners to provide safety, resource protection, and recreational opportunities   


Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.  

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
