Main Purpose of Job

This professional position responsible for providing leadership and technical assistance to local school systems, Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) staff members and other stakeholders for the implementation and use of information literacy skills to support student achievement and school reform.

POSITION DUTIES

Provides leadership and technical assistance for Maryland school library media programs; manages the implementation of State and national standards; consults with Local Education Agency supervisors to support school improvement and student achievement; serves as a liaison with public schools and various library affiliations; collaborates internally and externally to integrate Library Media Standards into Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and other content standards; participates in internal and external initiatives to promote and develop school library media programs; facilitates the MDK12 Digital Library Purchasing Consortium.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post baccalaureate course work in a Library Media program.

EXPERIENCE:  Four (4) years of experience as a school based media specialist and at least two (2) years in a leadership role.  Library Media leadership experience with state/national associations or at the district level is preferred.

NOTES:   

  1. Two years of additional experience as defined above may be substituted for the Master’s Degree.
  2. Possession of a Doctorate in a field related to the position may be substituted for one year of the experience requirements.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of trends, regulations, policies, and issues affecting School Library Media programs; knowledge of State and national laws and regulations governing School Library Media programs; knowledge of effective integration of information and technology literacy skills into curriculum development and instruction in support of student achievement; skill in developing and presenting professional development programs; skill in a variety of information and instructional technologies; ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple tasks; ability to work as a team member to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and possible travel throughout the State are required.  Any misrepresentation of academic or experience requirements for this position may result in non-selection or termination of employment.
