Main Purpose of Job

A Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE) Officer Trainee is the entry level of work involving the security, training, and supervision of adult inmates engaged in technical and production work of an industrial shop located in a correctional institution. The main purpose of this position is to provide training and supervision to an inmate work force in a correctional facility in the operations of textile production.

POSITION DUTIES

This position is responsible for training and supervising an inmate work force in the operation of textile production.  Works with full independence in an assigned production process and reviews the work of inmate trainees.

  • Trains inmate workers in production methods of a specified product
  • Supervises inmate workers in actual performance of the production process from determining raw materials to preparation for shipping
  • Train/instruct inmates in proper use of production machinery, draft and make patterns on new products; must be able to determine yardage as necessary
  • Inspects work in process, finished goods and maintains acceptable quality standards as determined by the Plant Manager
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in the operations of textile production (such as working with industrial sewing equipment, garment manufacturing or cutting fabric).

Notes: 1. Specific educational requirements and other selection standards are set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code and are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience in garment construction in apparel industry.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
