The Maryland Historical Trust is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, the Maryland Historical Trust assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Historical Trust serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is located in Crownsville, Maryland and is responsible for directly administering activities of the Maryland Historical Trust's Capital Grant program within the Office of Preservation Services, Division of Historical and Cultural Programs; directly administering grants for capital projects awarded by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority; and providing technical preservation information to the public and to local and state agencies for these programs. The position directly supports the Agency's mission to enhance Maryland's historic sites and traditions and preserve Maryland's heritage resources.


1. Administering bricks-and-mortar rehabilitation projects assisted with MHT Capital Grant funding and Maryland Heritage Areas Authority funding.  Reviewing plans and specifications in coordination with MHT Easement Program and MHT Review & Compliance.  Assisting grantees with RFP / competitive procurement process. Reviewing and authorizing requests for payment.  Ensuring project compliance with program policies.  

2. Conducting on-site meetings prior to, during, and upon the completion of all grant assisted rehabilitation projects to provide administrative and technical assistance and to verify compliance of projects in advance of grant payments.  

3. Promoting the Capital Grant Program to the public and responding to all general inquiries about the program.  Developing and maintaining application and guidelines.  Leading and organizing workshops for potential applicants.  Providing technical assistance, including site visits, for potential applicants regarding preservation best practice, organizational requirements, and site control issues.  Evaluating applications and coordinating review and ranking process.    Preparing annual reports.  

4. Providing the general public with technical assistance and program assistance.  Participating in outreach activities through MHT and other preservation organizations.  Making presentations to professional organizations or conferences as requested.  


Education: A degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Architecture, Historic Architecture, Urban Planning, or other closely related field; or a degree in any field with a certificate in historic preservation or closely related field.  Please specify your major on the job application.

Experience: Two years of work experience, internships, or volunteer work in historic preservation or a closely related field.


1. Additional graduate education may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.  


1. Knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and ability to apply the Standards to review of project drawings and specifications. 

2. Knowledge of traditional building methods and conservation techniques.

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.


Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
