Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as the Chief of the Division of Virology/Immunology of the Laboratories Administration within the Maryland Department of Health. The position delivers technical and scientific leadership while supervising, managing and providing guidance to the Administration's scientific and technical staff in standard virology and immunology laboratory practices, policies and procedures including but no limited to: quality control/quality assurance initiatives, lab safety and bio-security. The position is also responsible for personnel and budgetary functions to ensure high-quality internal and external customer service, The Division Chief serves as a subject matter expert in public health virology and immunology testing (e.g. virus isolation, chlamydia, hepatitis, microbial serology, and rabies) to both internal and external partners and clients of the Laboratories Administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a doctoral degree from an accredited academic institution in microbiology, molecular biology, virology or related life science discipline and have at least 4 years of experience supervising a CLIA compliant clinical laboratory.  Candidates should have experience working in a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory/facility and must be able to maintain medical clearance to wear N95/PAPR respirator, must be able to maintain immunization against the Rabies virus.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have knowledge and experience required to guide/supervise the scientific operations of laboratory units within Division of Virology and Immunology, including serological assays, traditional virology techniques and procedures, molecular technology, ie. PCR, handling highly infectious agents, writing standard operating procedures, grant proposals and correspondence.  Good organizational skills, computer skills and verbal/written communication skills are essential to the work performed by the position.
