Introduction

The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) is accepting applications from all qualified applicants for the purpose of Stationary Engineer, 1st Grade. This position serves as a full performance level of work involving the operation and maintenance of all plant machinery.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is a full performance level of work involving the operation and maintenance of all plant machinery on a 24 hour shift coverage 5 days per week and operation of a computerized energy management system. This position relates to the agency's mission in that it provides consistent and dependable support for DLLR employee who, through their efforts, provide economic stability to the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

24 hour shift coverage of plant and building operation to maintain good building temperatures for state employees as well as the public.

Perform preventive maintenance to all HVAC AC equipment related to climate control and make repair to some when needed. Equipment includes boilers, pumps, air handlers, chillers and sump pumps.

Clean coils in air handler units and convectors to maintain optimum heat exchange. Keep records on boiler performance and of fuel consumed. Performs maintenance to roof and refrigeration equipment. May check hourly on the system in their care, taking meter reading and observing all other indications of possible malfunctioning. Keeps records of materials and supplies used.

Knowledge of the operation of boilers of all types and equipment including combustion control equipment, such as the orsat. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required for safe operation of boilers and the auxiliaries. Knowledge of the tools, methods and practices used in maintaining and cleaning boilers and their auxiliaries. Knowledge of the principles of electricity, hydraulics and mechanics. Skill in firing boilers Skill in reading gauges and otherwise observing and judging operation efficiency and safety conditions of boilers in use. Skill in adjusting operating safety controls in order to achieve maximum efficiency. Ability to comprehend and execute written or oral instructions. Ability to maintain records of fuel consumption, maintenance services, repairs and supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of eighth grade.

Experience: Two years of experience in a boiler room facility tending a boiler.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional licensed stationary engineering experience on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience as a non-commissioned officer in Steelworker classifications or Mechanical Maintenance specialty codes in the Metal Fabrication, Assembly, Installation, and Repair field of work on year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Stationary Engineer, First Grade from the State Board of Stationary Engineers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (DLLR/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to DLLR/DUI as a result of unemployment overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.

1. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
