Maryland Eastern Regional Counties (Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico & Worcester)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Natural Resources Police (NRP), is currently accepting applications for three Long-Term Contractual Natural Resources Police Officers to work in the Eastern Regional Counties (Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico & Worcester) of Maryland. Basic duties will include boating safety, natural resources law enforcement and assisting permanent NRP Officers. Persons in these positions may be required to work in all weather conditions, holidays, weekends and shifts longer than 8 hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) regulation.

Experience: None.

Note: The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess current certification or eligible for recertification (within 3 years) as a Police Officer by the MPCTC.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualifications; please include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

  • Prior work experience in the enforcement of Boating and Conservation Laws OR
  • Prior work experience or knowledge of the Maryland Seafood Industry and laws
  • Ability to operate an 18’ or larger center console motor vessel

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to officers who are currently certified or eligible for recertification (within 3 years) as a Police Officer by the MPCTC.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle and will be required to possess a motor operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification will be required to provide the employer with a telephone number where they can be reached.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
