Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Tidewater Ecosystem Assessment (TEA) Division, a national leader in ecological assessment, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist IV position in the Water Quality Assessment group. TEA is an interdisciplinary group that utilizes an assessment and research driven approach to monitor Chesapeake and Coastal Bays tidal water and habitat quality and restoration.

This position is located in our Annapolis, MD headquarters. The Monitoring Integration group focuses on analysis of tidal and non-tidal water quality data collection and analysis from a statewide network of continuous monitors and its integration with high frequency spatial mapping and long-term fixed station monitoring for purposes of water quality criteria and habitat assessments.

The main purpose of this position is to compile, analyze, and interpret tidal and non-tidal water quality, flow, and natural resources data to assess the State's progress towards meeting the new Chesapeake Bay Agreement goals and objectives for protecting and restoring water quality and living resources habitats; manage, direct, and coordinate monitoring programs; organize and direct technical research studies to evaluate ongoing monitoring programs; prepare reports, tables, and figures that interpret and convey results of statistical analyses; investigate problems associated with water quality and living resources analyses and integrate findings into Chesapeake Bay-wide indicators used to guide management and restoration actions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: Five years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Notes: 

1. Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credits for one year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualifications; please include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

  • Training in biology, ecology or a natural resources related field
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), statistical software, and/or water quality monitoring technologies

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
