Introduction

    *This is a rotating  shift position Monday- Friday and every other weekend. The incumbent will work twenty eight days from 7:00 am -3:00 pm and rotate twenty eight days 3:00 pm-11:00 pm.

Main Purpose of Job

Perform the duties of shift supervisor in Computer Operations at Public Safety Data Center. This involves the supervision of Computer Operators who perform various control functions on large scale Mainframe IBM computers and associated peripheral equipment which runs under MVS/ESA software environment. The on-line computer system is utilized 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The for computer system is used for transactions processed by 1,850 terminals at 275 locations with 8,200 users throughout the state which are connected to the Public Safety Data Center. The on-line computer is directly interfaced to fourteen other mainframe computers including the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City, Baltimore City, Baltimore City Police, all courts, all majors counties and seven mini computers CPU-CPU linked to Motor Vehicles Administration, National Crime Information Center, National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System(NLETS), and provides service to one hundred fifty- three agencies in Maryland. The duties and responsibilities of this position require that the incumbent be identified as an EMERGENCY ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE. As defined in Executive Order 01.013.1981.10 Procedure for Release of State Employees under Emergency Conditions, an emergency essential employee is one whose duties are of such nature as to require the employee to report to work or remain at the work site to continue agency operation during an emergency situation. The appointing authority or designee may excuse emergency essential employees from duty, or require their presence, as circumstances and conditions warrant, to maintain minimum staffing requirements for the affected facility (ies). Emergency Essential Employees will be notified of their essential status no later than December 1 of each year.

POSITION DUTIES

Operate and monitor all mainframe and distributed mission critical computers by entering commands through associated system consoles and monitoring applications.

Establish effective work productivity as it relates to efficient use of system resources to assure batch work and system task are processed timely and efficiently.

Resolve Problems with users pertaining to providing requested assistance and information to users as well as with issues pertaining to reported or noted system problems, errors or equipment malfunctions utilizing agency protocol for handling mission critical processes and systems.

Supervise employees on shift as it pertains to knowledge about employee activities and behaviors. Establish regular processes for monitoring performance.

Create employee work schedules and approve employee leave and post leave on the schedule.

Assure that all employees on the shift are up to date on all systems maintained in the computer room.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems.

Notes: 1. Experience operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing or maintaining information may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Fifteen credit hours in computer operation at an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

CREDIT HOURS EARNED MUST BE ADDED TO THE APPLICATION SO YOU CAN BE EVALUATED PROPERLY.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Computer System Operations classifications or Computer System Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet this selective qualification to be considered. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

One year of experience operating on a Mainframe Computer.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualification is preferred, not required:

One year of experience utilizing mainframe computer.
One year of experience in Remedy or other help desk applications.
