Main Purpose of Job

This position performs as a Research and Development Scientist in the Division of Newborn and Childhood Screening by conducting applied research to develop and implement new technologically-advanced laboratory testing procedures to detect genetic and inherited metabolic conditions in the newborn specimens received at the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the infants in Maryland from heritable disorders and to reduce morbidity and mortality in newborns and children who have, or are at risk for, heritable disorders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a doctorate in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience:  Three years of experience performing applied public health research and development in a university, private or public health laboratory.

Notes:

1.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have at least one year of experience that involved troubleshooting tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) systems and developing, validating, and/or implementing a method in a clinical laboratory.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate will have a doctoral degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry or Medical Technology and at least three years of experience in troubleshooting MS/MS.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
