Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as Supervisor of the Environmental Metals and Radiation Laboratories, which is involved in the testing of toxic metals and radionuclides in multi-media environmental samples, human urine and blood, food and consumer products using approved analytical methods in support of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Superfund, ISO-17025, COMAR regulations, CDC and FDA initiatives for samples/specimens submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland and the environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or four years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Note:

1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate will have demonstrated leadership in coordinating the operation of an analytical testing laboratory.  The desired candidate will have experience operating analytical instrumentation used in testing environmental matrices such as water, food, and human urine and blood.  Experience in writing technical manuscripts, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance documents is also desired.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
