Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service is seeking a Cultural Resources Assistant to provide support and assistance to the Service's cultural resource planning and prioritization efforts. The Cultural Resources Assistant will be a 10-month contractual, full-time position that will focus on 1) identifying, collecting and aggregating existing cultural resource information in the Service's 75 park units; and 2) developing, populating and executing a prioritization system to guide necessary rehabilitation efforts. The position will report to the Maryland Park Service's Historic Resources Planner in Maryland Park Service Headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland.

Please note, candidates must be willing to drive several hours to state park units. A state car will be provided for all necessary travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in History from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One year of full-time professional experience working on historic preservation projects.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualifications; please include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

  • Possession of a graduate degree
  • Previous study or work experience in Historic Preservation or Architectural History
  • Preferred candidates should meet the Secretary of the Interiors Professional Qualifications Standards in the areas of Historic Architecture or Architectural History
  • Prior experience with State and/or National Park Systems or State/Tribal Historic Preservations Offices  

Candidates should possess the following skills:

  • Strong research, writing, and data organization skills
  • Communication skills are vital including occasional limited public speaking with small audiences
  • A good general knowledge of common architectural styles, forms, terms, and historical development
  • An excellent working knowledge of commonly used office computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, etc. (Preference given to candidates with knowledge of cultural resource database programs)
  • Ability to manage complex data and arrange, prioritize and present data in a digestible format to help decision makers plan capital projects

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
