Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, Cunningham Falls and Gambrill State Parks in Thurmont/Frederick, Maryland is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Park Naturalist. This position will be a 10- month contractual position working up to 20 hours per week Winter 2019 (January- February 2019) and 40 hours per week Spring/Summer 2019 (March 2019- October 2019). The Seasonal Park Naturalist develops and leads interpretive programming at a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to: develop and present interpretive and environmental education programs, assist with volunteers and youth programs, develop and maintains exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials, advise the public of general park rules and regulations, operation and maintenance of nature centers, buildings and grounds, including live animal care and handling associated with the Scales and Tales program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least one year of animal handling experience is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicant must have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years of age.
2. Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle and UTV (all terrain utility vehicle).
3. Position requires working weekends and holidays.
4. Position requires the ability to work with birds of prey and reptiles.
5. Must be able to lift a minimum of 20lbs.
6. Must be able to effectively communicate with large groups of people of varying age groups.
7. Applicant will be required to provide fingerprints for background check upon job offer as required by law to work with children.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
