Main Purpose of Job

An Environmental Health Specialist I is the intermediate level of work at a local health department performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations. The main purpose of the Environmental Sanitarian Specialist position is to assist in the promotion of all aspects of Environmental Health while enforcing all applicable State and Local Environmental Health laws and regulations. This position will conduct inspections of licensed food service facilities as specified in COMAR 10.15.03 to ensure that food is prepared, cooked, stored and served in a manner that will not jeopardize public health. This position will also conduct plan reviews of proposed food service facilities, review and approve applications for special food events, investigate complaints regarding licensed food service facilities and conduct investigations into possible food borne illnesses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience:  Six months of experience performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.

NOTES: 

1. A Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Environmental Engineering classifications or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Natural Resources field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.  A copy of your license must be attached to the application.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application. BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
