Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Public Relations Specialist within the Division of Tourism, Film, and the Arts.

This recruitment has a Selective Qualification. You must meet both, the Minimum Qualifications AND the Selective Qualification.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary responsibility of this position is to execute a media relations program to promote Maryland as a world-class travel destination to the regional and local trade and lifestyle media.

POSITION DUTIES

Candidates must be able to work with regional and local travel journalists to secure third-party editorial coverage of Maryland.  Job functions include: creating lasting connections to local and regional media outlets as measured through activities such as hosting travel media, media blitzes plus M3 and advertising equivalency; coordinating the public relations efforts to support activities of the Division; writing, editing and generating copy, fact sheets, and pitches that will enable Maryland to continue to inspire consumers to select Maryland as a travel destination. The selected employee will interact with local and regional journalists; media influencers, travel writers and national press network; the Maryland Tourism Industry, and the Maryland Association of Destination Marketing Organizations to determine the best strategy and messaging to increase visitor spending by showcasing the state as a must-see destination.  Some statewide travel is required.  

 

The selected employee will possess excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; have the ability to maintain effective working relationships; handle multiple, concurrent, and high priority projects; be well organized; and have proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows - Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software. The candidate will also have knowledge of web usability best practices, website navigation design and flow, content classification, and content management and media monitoring methods and systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Three (3) years of the required experience MUST include professional marketing with direct experience in public relations, media coordination, published communications, publicity or promotional work or related area.

 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or Marketing.

A Tourism background.

Experience in the following or equivalent: HTML, Adobe Creative Suite; Facebook Insights, YouTube Insights, Google Analytics, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Woobox; Dropbox, Google Drive, WEBDAM and Chute; Drupal and Wordpress; Cision, Critical Mentions, Vocus.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

This position is in a covered bargaining unit.
