As the designated State Historic Preservation Office, MHT is responsible for maintaining an inventory of historic and archeological sites, districts, buildings, and objects, as well as evaluating the significance of these resources.

The state of Maryland is highly regarded for the quality of the MHT library with regard to its diverse sources essential for research purposes and for increasing the state's knowledge of important resources within our borders.

The success of the MHT library lies not only in its physical collections but in its ability to serve as a center of guidance for conducting research within the historic preservation landscape of Maryland. The librarian serves not only as the manager and facilitator of MHT’s research collections but as someone who provides research consultation on all preservation issues to staff and outside scholars.
