Main Purpose of Job

A Coordinator Special Programs Health Services II, Mental Health is the full performance level of work coordinating programs in the Department of Health. The Kids Like Us program (KLU) provides free counseling support in small groups of children and youth adversely impacted by the substance misuse of a caretaker or close family member. KLU is school-based (Frederick County, MD) during the school year and community-based during the summer months. Over the past few years KLU has been expanding to reach more students in additional schools. This position will provide the services of this established selective prevention program. Our staff provides trauma-informed group services to students in grades 4 and above with a variety of mental health and human development needs including trauma, depression, anxiety, problematic behaviors, loss, and grief. Sessions take place in public schools and KLU provides mileage reimbursement and all supplies and materials. Our team members offer a consistent presence in the lives of those we serve by following students within their school feeder patterns through elementary, middle, and high school and offering summer programming. This is a part-time contractual position working 24 hours per week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, social work, psychology, education, counseling or a related field.  A copy of your transcript must be attached to the application. 

Experience:  Two years of professional experience in health services, one year of which must have been in the option for which application is made.

NOTES:

1. Applicants may substitute a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a health or human service field for one year of the required general experience.

2. Experience in the option must be as follows: professional work related to treatment and services for mentally ill patients.

3. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in another field plus one additional year of professional experience in health services may be substituted for the specific degree.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Administration classifications or Civil Affairs Specialist specialty codes in the health related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred applicant should have a master's degree in art therapy, counseling, social work, or related field; supervised clinical experience with youth ages 8 - 14; strong group facilitation and communication skills; knowledge of the impact of substance abuse and addiction on children/families or experience providing substance abuse treatment or recovery services; Maryland license as a professional or graduate clinical art therapist (LCPAT or LGPAT), counselor (LCPC or LGPC), or social worker (LGSW or LCSW-C).

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
