Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 200,000 active members and more than 150,000 retires and beneficiaries.

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as the lead worker of the Estimates Processing Section. This Section processes requests from members for estimates of their pension benefits upon retirement. Annually, this Section creates approximately 17,000 estimate notices for members. The work involves determining whether a member is eligible to retire at their requested retirement date, verifying the balance of member contributions made to the pension system, verifying the amount of retirement credit the member has earned, calculating the member’s final average compensation, and projecting additional retirement credit that will be earned through the requested retirement date. The lead worker assists the supervisor of the Section with assigning work to staff, training staff, resolving questions on member accounts, and plays a major role in checking/approving the work and calculations of staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Two years experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

*  Two years of experience performing or reviewing financial calculations                                

*  One year's experience supervising or leading staff

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.  You may be asked to complete a supplemental questionnaire.  The supplemental questionnaire may be used as part of the rating process.  Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.
