Main Purpose of Job

The position functions as a Background Investigator for the DPSCS. The incumbent is responsible for the completion of comprehensive background investigations for prospective agency employees. These investigations are reviewed by the Unit manager in order to determine an applicant's suitability for employment with the agency. The incumbent also provides assistance to the Administrator I Lead Background Investigator.

POSITION DUTIES

Interviews prospective applicants using standardized investigative questionnaire. Follow the interview procedures as established by the Centralized Hiring Unit.

Reviews documents, such as diplomas or degrees, presented by the applicant to ensure that they are authentic. Review other forms and materials submitted by the applicant to ensure they are complete and acceptable.

Completes a comprehensive background investigation that includes numerous sources or outlets to be utilized in the verification process. Summarizes the results of the investigation in a standardized format for submission of the completed case to the Unit Manager. Provides assistance to the Administrator I Lead Background Investigator.

Respond to inquiries from other law enforcement agencies/entities with regard to background investigations which have been completed and are on file. This task is completed with the approval of the Unit Manager.

Travel to the Eastern Shore of Maryland or to Western Maryland in order to participate in interviews conducted at those locations.

Assist in the completion of various tasks at the request of the Unit Manager or Assistant Manager. This would include assisting in the processing of fingerprint records, providing telephone coverage or assisting with mail.

Process applicants regarding their body art in accordance with the DPSCS Intelligence standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Two years experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are preferred, not required:

Two years of experience working as a Background Investigator.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
