LOCATION OF POSITION

Several positions are located throughout the State of Maryland. Therefore, the resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future vacancies.

Main Purpose of Job

This position supervises Correctional Dietary Officers who are responsible for supervising adult inmates in the preparation and servings of meals in a correctional facility.

POSITION DUTIES

Directs the work of subordinate Correctional Dietary Officers supervising inmate workers in meal preparation;

Informs subordinate Correctional Dietary Officers of changes in regulations, institutional directives and inmate activities;

Counsels Correctional Dietary Officers on violations of rules and regulations and, when necessary, initiates disciplinary action;

Reviews requests for leave and recommends approval or disapproval;

Reviews incident reports filed by Correctional Dietary Officers;

Conducts initial investigations of complaints regarding violations of rules by officers or inmates;

Ensures that Correctional Dietary Officers receive proper on-the-job training and identifies performance problems that could be alleviated by additional training;

Supervises officers in the search of inmates and physical surroundings for unauthorized items;

Prepares reports of incident investigations, officer performance, training needs and supply requirements;

May be required, in an emergency, to enforce security measures anywhere on institutional grounds;

Responsible for the maintenance of order and discipline in the kitchen, serving and food service areas and the protection of equipment, cutlery, food and other items of inventory from sabotage, adulteration or pilferage;

Participates in menu planning by determining quantities and selecting, purchasing, requisitioning and accounting for food, equipment and related supplies; Inspects food supplies and implements waste control measures;

Participates in the in-service training of all employees and inmate helpers in food service activities;

Performs other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Three years of experience involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmate workers in a food operation of a correctional institution.

Notes:

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Some positions in this classification may require employees to obtain the appropriate State of Maryland driver's license to operate motor vehicles for the transportation of inmates or supplies.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a Correctional Officer during their probationary period (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
A completed background investigation
Oral interview
Physical examination.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
