Main Purpose of Job

This position functions at the full-performance level, providing law enforcement work, governing the safety and protection of personnel, patients and property of the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital where care is provided to mentally ill offenders, patients or residents who have been judged not criminally responsible for committing felonies: and to those who are too violent for a regular hospital or residential setting and who have been deemed dangerous to themselves or others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Police Training Commission regulation.

Experience: One year of experience as a law enforcement officer.

Notes: 1. The above educational requirement is set by the Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Military Police classifications or Military Police specialty codes in the security field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in this classification may be required to complete a special health related training course during their probationary period as required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

3. Employees in this classification must possess police officer certification or a special police commission as required by the Maryland Police Training Commission at the time of application Police Training Commission Article, Section 3-207 209of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

4. Employees in this classification who have secured a special police commission must obtain a handgun permit in accordance with the Maryland Handgun Permit Law, Article 5, Section 303.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien Status Must be at least 21 years of age A completed background investigation Oral interview Physical examination.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms.

4. Employees in the classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
