Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to manage, evaluate, direct, coordinate, administer and supervise the Chronic Disease Prevention Program consisting of 14 full time and 1 part time position, comprised of professional nurses, community health educators, paraprofessionals and secretarial staff, in fulfilling the mission of the Department of Health, which is to preserve, promote and protect all people who live, work and play in Anne Arundel County.  Specific areas of programmatic responsibility for this position include the Breast and Cervical Cancer program (BCCP); healthy eating education, including obesity prevention; cancer and tobacco-use prevention, including tobacco cessation and tobacco enforcement; Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prevention, including diabetes and hypertension and management of online health education resources, Learn to Live Healthy and AA Healthy Kids. This position also serves as the Department of Health's coordinator of the Conquer Cancer Advisory Council.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s degree in nursing or related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience as a Community Health Nurse in an administrative, supervisory, consultative or teaching capacity or one year of experience as a Community Health Nurse and two years of experience in an administrative, supervisory, consultative or teaching capacity as a Registered Nurse.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university and two years of experience as a Community Health Nurse for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university and three years of experience as a Community Health Nurse for the required education.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classification or Nursing or Health Care Specialist specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.  

 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualification include:  background in cancer screening services; strong social marketing/public health messaging skills and ability to build and foster strong community relationships; and, strong writing skills.  Additionally, experience with budget development, grant writing and policy development is desired.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number at which they can be reached.
