Main Purpose of Job

A Dental Assistant II is the full performance level of work assisting dentists in the dental care of clients. This position requires the employee to assist dentists providing dental care to pediatric ages one to twenty, pregnant women, and adults who are HIV positive. The incumbent must be able to maintain appropriate hygiene and sterilization protocols to prevent contamination and spread of infection; must be able to take x-rays; assist dentist with procedures by aspirating oral cavity, isolating teeth, retracting lips, cheeks, tongue and flaps; take vital signs; provide basic oral hygiene instructions; record and maintain patient histories and dental procedures. This position also requires answering phones, scheduling appointments, inputting demographic info using SoftDent Dental Program, confirm Medical Assistance coverage using EVS, greeting patients, and assist in maintaining adequate dental supply inventories.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:     Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalence certificate.

Experience:  Two years of experience assisting a dentist in the performance of dental care.

NOTES:

1.  Applicants may substitute additional experience as a dental assistant for the required education on a year for year basis for the required education.

2.  Candidates listed as a dental assistant qualified in general duties on the roster of the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners will meet the experience requirements.

3.  Candidates may substitute a completed dental assistant training program for the required experience.

4.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Dental assistant classifications or Dental Assistant or Specialist specialty codes in the dental field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires that the candidate work primarily with children many of whom have never had dental treatments and may be anxious or upset. The successful candidate should have some experience working with pediatric patients and must demonstrate the ability to remain calm and soothing.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Candidates for positions in this classification must be listed as a dental assistant qualified to place and expose x-rays and be able to provide a copy of a registration card upon application on the roster of the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners. A copy of your registration card must be attached to the application.

2.  Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete training and maintain a current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
