Main Purpose of Job

A staff dentist is charged with the duty of evaluating, diagnosing and treating patients for their general and preventive dental care admitted to the hospital, with the participation of the patients, most commonly of young adult age and middle age, less commonly of geriatric age, and only rarely adolescents on the deaf unit. All clinical activities and duties which include regular dental assignments and serving elsewhere as needed, are to be carried out in accordance with hospital policies, rules and regulations in accordance with performance improvement goals, and within the fiscal constraints mandated to the hospital. All clinical activities are to be documented in the medical record as required by hospital policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the State Board of Dental Examiners under the licensing requirements for Dentists.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the practice of dentistry with two (2) years of the required experience in an institutional setting or a public health program.

Notes: 1. A Master’s degree in public health may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dental Officer classifications or Dental Corpsman or Officer specialty codes in the dental field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Dentist from the State Board of Dental Examiners, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215-2299.

2. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess or be eligible to obtain controlled substances registration certificates as issued by the Federal government and the State of Maryland in order to prescribe narcotic medication.

3. Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants may be given a medical examination prior to appointment to determine their ability to perform the work of the position.
