This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS). The resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future recruitments for the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPSCS). Applicants certified to this list will remain eligible for one year.

Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to support the Department's mainframe messaging system, WebSphere MQ, and also install software tools for the programming staff, which entails the installation, performance and tuning of Compuware software tools, Syncsort sorting software, and IBI's FOCUS query software on the IBM 2828 CPU.
POSITION DUTIES
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Support the Department's messaging software, along with installing, customizing and supporting software products, which include, but are not limited to: FOCUS, Syncsort, TLMS, and Compuware products.
There is currently one major operating system that is supported by this team. The z/OS operating system supplies the system control for the IBM 2828-H06 CPU. This team is also responsible for the implementation of the backup and recovery procedures necessary to ensure continued service to the user community of 2500+ computer terminals.
Provide coding of specially required programs to meet system requirements.
Advise the Operations, Programming, and Management sections of ITCD on the various technical questions regarding the operating system. Give informal classes to systems analysts and programmers on software products and operating system techniques.
Aid in the preparation of system operating procedures for the Operations Section. Instruct operations on gathering data from computer malfunctions. The need to support a network 24 hours a day, seven days a week requires the total cooperation of all staff in times of malfunctions.
Determine the cause of mainframe computer malfunctions.
Provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on-call service to a real time teleprocessing and a batch computer operation. Administer the functions necessary to provide computer system services and support for State, local, federal law enforcement communities. This requires a very high level of system availability 24 hours a day 7 days a week This schedule of processing requires well-managed change control and disaster recovery procedures.
Participate in the evaluation process for the procurement of software, hardware, and contractual vendors. Keep abreast of new technologies in the mainframe environment by attending training classes, seminars and reading journals and magazines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other information technology related field to include course work in machine or assembler computer languages, and operating system and data communication technology for multipurpose, multi tasking computers.
Experience: One year of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi tasking computers.
Notes: 1. Thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or other information technology related field to include course work in machine or assembler computer languages, and operating system and data communication technology for multipurpose multi tasking computers may be substituted for the required education.
2. One additional year of experience maintaining and modifying operating systems for multipurpose, multi tasking computers may be substituted for the required education.
3. Experience operating multipurpose, multi tasking computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on multipurpose, multi tasking computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using third generation or other generally accepted computer programming languages; or designing, developing and maintaining communications networks may be substituted for high school on a year for year basis.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Computer Systems Operations classifications or Computer Systems Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience installing, maintaining and monitoring a z/OS mainframe system.
Professional experience installing, maintaining and monitoring Websphere MQ mainframe system on a z/OS platform.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached or will be furnished with a pager.
SELECTION PROCESS
All persons who meet the minimum and selective qualification will be will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and will be placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.
