This is a professional position responsible for reviewing disability claims and establishing eligibility for Social Security Disability Benefits and Supplemental Security Income.

Determine eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income Payments; secures appropriate medical, vocational and psychological documentation as required by established federal standards; provides general information about Disability Determination Services; uses medical terminology to accurately describe impairments; evaluates evidence to determine the degree and severity of disabilities in each electronic case; makes recommendations to award or deny benefits; writes determinations and defends the assessments.

EDUCATION:

Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.  

EXPERIENCE:

Level I - Professional experience in a behavioral or social science related field is preferred. 

Level II - Two years of professional experience in a behavioral or social science related field or a Master’s Degree in a Behavioral or Social Science related field may be substituted for one year of the experience. 

• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Experience with electronic case processing
• Analytical, organizational and time management skills
• Bilingual skills.

Individuals selected for positions with the Maryland State Department of Education's Disability Determination Service (DDS) will go through a complete Tier 2 federal background investigation.  A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems.
