Main Purpose of Job

This is a designated professional assistant position serving as a special projects assistant to the State Superintendent Schools responsible for leading and implementing executive initiatives and coordinating strategic plans along with cross-functional initiatives. Also this position tracks key initiative progress, while leading and executing special projects.   

POSITION DUTIES

Leads Department initiatives, special projects, new initiatives to improve organizational efficiency, visibility, and organization-wide leadership development;  ensures effective coordination and collaboration among all key divisions and offices including assistance to local school systems related to outreach, intervention, compliance monitoring, consultation and technical assistance; participates in and tracks policy reviews and the work of key task forces related to organization-wide initiatives which contribute to the State Superintendent’s vision and functions; prepares policy papers, facts, research findings, review of materials, and remarks/talking points for speaking engagements and presentations on behalf of the State Superintendent; evaluates program effectiveness, determines program needs, and recommends plans for advancing program objectives; organizes and coordinates meetings and serves as liaison between MSDE and constituents in carrying out MSDE program objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  A Master’s Degree or 36 post baccalaureate credit hours of coursework in Communications, Education, Public Administration, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of administrative and/or management experience in an education or related field/program that involved education program management, communications, or project management. Experience with policy or public relations is desirable.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of education policy issues; skill in researching, organizing, and communicating education policy; skill in managing projects and initiatives across multiple areas of the organization; skill in organizing and managing multiple tasks; demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with multiple parties to lead and manage activities; ability to interface, impact and influence at all levels within the organization; ability to assess and identify problems and recommend appropriate improvements and solutions; ability to use sound judgment; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION
