The Maryland State Archives in Annapolis is dedicated to preserving Maryland’s records and history. The Archives’ Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for students interested in archival and library science, history, museum studies, and document conservation to gain valuable experience in the field.

Main Purpose of Job

Student interns will engage in a variety of activities related to the management, preservation, use and circulation of archival collections. Individual intern assignments will vary, but duties may include:

Assisting in the operations of the public search room, processing and cataloging records and collection items, handling, identifying, and inventorying records and collection items, digitizing records, conducting in-depth research on various topics in Maryland history, conserving and re-housing documents, books and other collection items, library collection development.

Interns must be: Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy, team oriented with good communication and customer service skills, able to work independently, willing to seek help when needed and able to carefully lift a 40lb box.


Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week, starting on May 30 through August 7.

Job duties will vary by project, but will include: Cleaning and mending of documents and books,  identifying, inventoring and properly housing records and collection items,  digitizing records, retrieving records for patrons, responding to reference inquires,  data entry,  conducting biographical and thematic research on topics in Maryland history, assist with the Archives’ social media outreach and complete required program reports and evaluations.


In order to be considered for an internship, must meet one of the following education requirements:

-Be a current high school student and able to get a State Work Permit,
-A current college student, undergraduate or graduate level.
-Recent college graduate within the last year.

-Be a current resident of the state of Maryland or an enrolled student in a Maryland school.


Desired or Preferred Qualifications:

-Good computer skills and experience working with databases and with the Microsoft Suite of Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Mail and social media.

-Experienced working with archival collections.
