Introduction

This is a Management Service position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service, is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Eastern Regional Forester. The position is assigned to the Salisbury Multi-Service Center office located in Salisbury, Maryland. Position is responsible for overseeing and administering Field Operations of the Eastern Region, the Chesapeake Forest Lands, and the Pocomoke State Forest. Primary duties include directing, planning, organizing, administering, and implementing regional activities in each of the following program areas: Forest Resource Management Program, Critical Areas Program, Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, Forest Resource Protection Program, Information and Education Program, Urban and Community Forestry Program and regulatory enforcement activities. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters.  

Experience: Five years of professional forestry experience involving forest or park management, wildlife biology, forest recreation planning, forest engineering, urban and community forestry, timber harvest and marketing, forest planning or forest protection. Two years of the required experience must include supervision of employees in related forestry activities.                                             

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute a Master of Science degree approved by the State Board of Foresters for one year of the required non-supervisory code.  

2. Education requirement is pursuant to the Business Occupations and Professions Article, Sections 7-206 and 7-304 of the Annotated Code.  

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the forestry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.     

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in forest stewardship planning, watershed forestry, wildland fire protection, and implementing urban and community forestry programs.

This recruitment is limited to current Maryland Department of Natural Resources employees.

Successful candidates may be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.
