Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 245,000 active members and more than 160,000 retires and beneficiaries.

The Agency is seeking a Private Equity investment professional to serve as Senior Portfolio Manager in its Investment Division.  The Senior Portfolio Manager reports directly to the Managing Director, Private Equity, who is responsible for the Private Equity Portfolio. Under the direction of the Managing Director, the Senior Portfolio Manager will assist in the sourcing, evaluating, recommending, and monitoring of investments in the Private Equity portfolio. This individual will work collaboratively with the Managing Director to support the overall investment program.  This position will require significant travel which will likely include international travel.  

This is a Management Service position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job

* Leads the monitoring and due diligence efforts of one or more asset classes.

* Actively sources investment opportunities and leads the due diligence and investment recommendation process.

* Actively participates in the internal management initiative.

* Leads quantitative modeling research projects.

* Responsible for market analysis within assigned asset class for the purpose of recommending tactical positioning in an effort to add value over benchmark.

POSITION DUTIES

The Senior Portfolio Manager will perform regular reviews and evaluations of managers, and participate in meetings with prospective managers; assist with due diligence on new investments; assist in the process of reviewing and negotiating fund documentation; work collaboratively with the operations and legal teams in the initiation and maintenance of accounts; conduct research on investment ideas; track and model investment performance and exposures; assist the Managing Director in preparing presentation materials for Investment Committee and staff meetings; manage consultant relationships; assist in the development of analysts, associates, and interns; assist in the maintenance of records related to investments; and participate in other projects and duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college in Math, Science, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, or similar fields of study.

Experience:  Five years of professional investment experience in evaluating and recommending private market investments.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

*  Preference will be given to candidates with a CFA and/or CAIA designation and/or a graduate degree in Math, Science, Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration or similar field of study. 

*  Preference will be given to candidates with at least seven years of professional investment experience evaluating buyout, growth and venture capital general partners.

*  Experience evaluating direct co-investment opportunities is also preferred.
