Main Purpose of Job

This is a professional position responsible for researching, developing and providing information to the public and assisting the Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) Deputy Director with preparing and providing media and public relations information utilizing memos, brochures and web and social media platforms.

POSITION DUTIES

Researches, writes, edits, and publishes web pages for the MCSS website and social media pages; assists in developing electronic presentation materials and photographic images; maintains Center website ADA accessibility compliance;  provides support for the Center’s website and social media platforms; develops a variety of print publications including flyers, brochures, reports, newsletters, and school safety public service announcements; updates and revises Center printed/digital publications as needed; assists with developing materials for training classes, symposiums and conferences; provides photographic support for printed publications and media messaging; provides support to the Public Information Officer, the Executive Director, and Deputy Director by preparing media releases,  planning and conducting events, and assisting with projects, such as the annual safety conference.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with at least 30 semester credit hours in one or more of the following subjects: English, journalism, public relations, writing or other similar and related courses. Website design certifications are desirable.  

EXPERIENCE: Five years of professional experience in public information, public relations, journalism or other related experience in publicity or promotional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience utilizing web media, and graphic arts is preferred. 

Understanding of W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA is desired.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Employees in this classification are subject to Substance Abuse Testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
