Introduction

This is a Special Appointment position at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. The incumbent will work at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Main Purpose of Job

This position performs general maintenance repairs, services to maintain the building and grounds of the Public Safety Education and Training Center.

POSITION DUTIES

The position duties are as follows:

  • Completes general maintenance and housekeeping assignments throughout the Center as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and solve minor maintenance issues.
  • Performs basic repairs including but not limited to, plumbing, minor electrical, lighting and painting.

  • Completes work assignments for moving /rearranging furniture and equipment as requested by facility management personnel.

  • Operates manual, electronic or electronic tools and equipment.

  • Provides seasonal outdoor maintenance services such as grass cutting, snow removal, plant trimming, etc. as needed.

  • Maintain and make minor repairs to outdoor roadways, parking lots and walkways.

  • Remove ice and snow from parking lots and walkways.

  • Remove trash, leaves and other debris from outdoor areas, including gutters, window wells and storm drains as assigned.

  • Supervise minimum security inmates as assigned.

  • Responds to emergencies while fulfilling the rotational on-call schedules.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Three years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades provided that at least two years of such experience shall have been primarily with the trades of electricity, plumbing, steamfittings, refrigeration or air-conditioning.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.

2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidate must successfully complete a background investigation.

BENEFITS

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year. 

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
