Introduction

Maryland Public Television, which is commonly known by its familiar name "MPT", is a public television network that comprises six television stations that broadcast throughout the entire state of Maryland as well as into the District of Columbia and parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is the only state-wide broadcaster in Maryland. MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service.

Main Purpose of Job

Assistant Producer: Advances the mission of MPT to produce quality local programming and expand community outreach by assisting Series Producer in all aspects of production and post-production for the local series Artworks (up to 30 episodes/year)and Chesapeake Collectibles (13 episodes/year), as well as for specials such as the Baker Artist Awards and other projects as assigned.

 This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

Artworks 6

  • Assemble & edit shows to time, generate on-screen IDs (L3s) and Credits, prep for captioning   
  • Coordinate acquisition of visual artists’ high resolution images, WAV files from musicians and literary texts from writers for local segments: POP-UPS, CLOSING MUSIC & WORDS 
  • Creatively edit POP-UP, WORDS & MUSIC Sequences 
  • Runs Teleprompter for studio host records and location shoots 
  • Assists in creation of theme shows for fall premier of the next series 
  • Baker Artist Awards: assists on location artist profile shoots, runs teleprompter on live to tape studio record

Chesapeake Collectibles 8

  • Assist producer on location during feature story shoots. Will co-produce at least 2 feature stories per year
  • Ongoing: Research archival stills for historic context of selected items
  • Creates, solicits and maintains Volunteer lists and staffing charts
  • Compiles and maintains accurate Special and Photo Submission lists
  • Compiles and organizes Admissions Lists for evaluation event
  • Provides essential production support at the weekend evaluation event
  • Edits audio stringouts of the ROV camera segments after the shoot event

Both

  • Write & schedule weekly social media posts (tweets & Facebook) promoting shows and events
  • Updates series’ segment rundowns and participant lists
  • Notifies artists and participants of their airdates
  • Completes monthly metadata excel sheets, exports show stills, and writes thumbnail descriptions for posting the series online (Cove)
  • Assists in developing and expanding each series’ digital content: extended interviews, online galleries, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in film, media, mass communications or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: One year of experience which involved various aspects of television production such as research, segment creation, booking facilities and editing. Must have at least six (6) months hands-on nonlinear video editing experience on one of the following programs. In order of priority: AVID, FINAL CUT PRO, ADOBE PREMEIRE.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.  

  • Current Content Division Interns and/or Production Assistants 
  • Hands-on editing and production experience with one of the specific shows: Artworks or Chesapeake Collectibles
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop program
  • Exhibits strong organization and file management skills
  • Independent worker as well as a team player 
  • Self-motivated and adaptable 
  • Ability to prioritize workload efficiently and manage multiple projects 
  • Effectively work under pressure, react quickly and meet tight deadlines

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Finalists will be required to successfully complete a short, timed nonlinear video editing assignment.
