Introduction

Maryland Public Television, which is commonly known by its familiar name "MPT", is a public television network that comprises six television stations that broadcast throughout the entire state of Maryland as well as into the District of Columbia and parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is the only statewide broadcaster in Maryland. MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service.

Main Purpose of Job

The Sr. Avid Editor will provide a high level of technical and creative video editing expertise to the Post Production finishing process. The incumbent must be able to work within a team of producers & editors to meet the Production show assembly goals. Those goals include the assembling & polishing of each program into a high quality video, from individual elements to file-based delivery on deadline at the end of each week. This will be done on Avid's Symphony editing system in a multi-editor, multi-suite workflow. Advanced editing proficiency with the Avid Symphony software is necessary. Knowledge of and proficiency in other editing, graphics and audio software will be an asset.

The incumbent must be willing to work flexible hours to include a short turn around, overtime, holidays, and weekends. The incumbent must be able to lift 50 lbs. or more due to the weight of the equipment.

 This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

  • The Sr. Avid Editor must bring an advanced knowledge and practical experience using Avid’s Symphony finishing edit system, which includes the ability to import, link and organize video, audio & graphics, color correction of video, inserting captions, final audio mixes and metadata within the Avid project.
  • The Sr. Avid Editor must be able to decide and/or select video, audio, graphics, etc. which best convey the message of the program as specified by the Producer and ensure an appropriate look-continuity between episodes of an ongoing weekly series.
  • The Sr. Avid Editor must be able to create new or adapt existing graphic elements to match an existing program graphic look.
  • The Sr. Avid Editor will export a final video which meets all applicable technical standards, in a file-based and/or physical format and backup all essential metadata/media for archival purposes.
  • The Sr. Avid Editor will need to work in a team environment, displaying a clean editing workflow to enable other staff editors to fill in on the project when needed. This includes efficient original media management, Avid media management, Avid project bin organization, on-going project/elements backup, final project backup for long-term archival purposes or future editing, etc.
  • The Sr. Avid Editor will also provide media duplication, DVD creation and file-based conversion when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a technical finishing editor on a broadcast television series, using the Avid Symphony and/or Avid Media Composer editing system.  

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

Current documented and relevant experience within the last five (5) years of the following:  

  • Working knowledge of network technical specifications for program delivery. (e.g., PBS, APT, Discovery/Velocity, NETA, etc.)
  • Experience using Sony XDCAM PDW-F1600 decks, PDW-U1/ U2 readers or Sony HDCAM decks.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud Software (e.g., PhotoShop, After Effects, Premiere, Media Encoder, etc.)
  • Experience using Avid Plug-ins (e.g., Boris Sapphire FX, StageTools Moving Picture, NewBlue Titler Pro, etc.)
  • Experience exporting file-based videos and using transcoding software (e.g., Sorenson Squeeze, Media Encoder, Digital Rapids/Imagine Software Systems, etc.)

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
