FACULTY MSD - Digital Literacy/Library/Media Teacher

Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.  As such, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD.

Main Purpose of Job

To teach basic and advanced computer skills, film and video production, graphic design, and visual communication strategies; To manage school library system including books, electronic books, and tech devices; Support teachers and staff in developing effective use of information, ideas, and effective users of technology for instruction.

POSITION DUTIES

  • To teach deaf and hard of hearing elementary and middle school students in topics established in State of Maryland Technological Literacy curriculum, such as basic computer skills, word processing, data base spread sheet applications, presentation slide shows, ethical and appropriate computer and social media uses
  • To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and discerning, technologically literate, ethical users of information
  • To instill a love of lifelong learning in all students
  • To provide leadership and expertise at the school library including serving as school media and digital media specialist with focus on transforming existing library system into electronic-based system such as one-on-one devices, classroom technology and others
  • To provide instruction in library/digital library skills
  • To develop a school library media program that addresses 21st-century skills, including life and career development, learning and innovation, and information, media, and technology literacy
  • To ensure equitable access to information and learning resources
  • To prepare lesson plans, reports,and keep records of student progress
  • To ascertain learning needs of students and establish evaluation techniques for assessment of progress
  • To practice bilingual education and concepts with all students
  • To maintain all library and media equipment, materials, and library-related and media-related inventories including electronic books and subscriptions
  • To ensure equitable access to information and learning resources
  • To assume other duties as directed by the Principal and Assistant Principals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor's Degree (preferably in Education, Instructional Technology, or Library Media); Maryland State Department of Education certification as a Library/Media Specialist or Computer Science (or ability to obtain soon after hire). Fluency in ASL and written English.

Experience:  Experience working with technology or softwares such as Google Suite, Apple OS, Final Cut Pro, web-based content systems, and others. Knowledge of Deaf community; Ability to teach or work with students of different educational backgrounds and additional disabilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
