Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

To develop and implement a bilingual educational science program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students. To provide a language enriched environment through use of sign language and printed word to meet the varied needs of Deaf Students.

POSITION DUTIES

Teach and assess deaf students including the implementation of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. Create and maintain a classroom conducive to learning based on student assessments and data using the best practices of bilingual pedagogy, project based, inquiry based, and differentiated instruction. Design and make materials to facilitate student learning of science concepts, practices, and literacy. Provide an instructional environment that encourages maximum student engagement and participation and that appropriately challenges students with appropriate learning opportunities. Utilize a variety of instructional resources to prepare for and to meet the needs of students with different ability and interest levels. Maintain lesson plan book, grade book, portfolios, annual plans, daily attendance, and emergency classroom lesson plans. Create and maintain a classroom environment that is well-organized, attractive, safe, and facilitates learning, including organizing the physical space, equipment, and material to support instruction. Utilize effective classroom management for optimal learning including managing student behavior; model appropriate behavior and promote self-control. Collect data and follow individualized behavior programming and IEP accommodations. Consult on IEP goals, progress, and accommodations. Maintain the safe storage of lab materials. Work collaboratively with other staff members as it relates to the instruction, social emotional well-being, and safety of students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Education, biology, physics, chemistry, environmental science, or related field required.

Experience: Candidates must be eligible to apply for or be willing to obtain certification by the Maryland State Department of Education within prescribed amount of time. Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required. Knowledge of the deaf culture, deaf education, students with additional disabilities, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in Education or special education of Deaf students, biology, physics, chemistry, environmental science, or related field. Maryland State Department of Education Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568.)
