Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to transport physically and/or mentally ill patients and clients. The main purpose of this position is to also transport supplies, equipment, medication, lab specimens/reports, donated items, mail, payroll and personnel. All transports should be in a safe, timely dignified and professional manner utilizing vehicles such as van, bus, automobile, truck and/or ambulance.

Some job responsibilities include:

  • Transport patients and clients to various destinations via appropriate vehicle.
  • Position and secure patients and clients within vehicles to ensure their safety.
  • Perform daily inspections of vehicles used to ensure proper and safe operating conditions. Perform minor roadside vehicle repair. Wash, wax, and clean interior of vehicles.
  • Assist health care staff with patients/clients to include providing first aid to passengers.


Experience: Six months of experience operating automotive vehicles transporting passengers, patients, or clients.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Vehicle Operations classifications or Motor Transport or Vehicle Operations specialty codes in the passenger transporting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


1.Employees must possess or obtain a Class C non-commercial driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2.Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which involve the operation of large passenger vehicles. Employees assigned these duties will be required to possess a driver’s license of the appropriate class valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification will be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, violence management and basic first aid training.


1.Employees may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employer with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2.Some positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the employee to operate a vehicle with a manual transmission.

3.Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
