LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
Install, repair, test and maintain electrical equipment and fixtures such as fluorescent and incandescent units, conduit tubing and boxes, wiring, panels, antennas, outlets, fans, washing and drying machines and ranges; electrical systems such as fire and security systems and heating and cooling systems; and control devices such as switches, fuses, ballasts, generators, motors, compressors, relays and transformers.
Service and repair electrical systems and units by replacing fuses, coils, switches, wiring and transformers.
Locate and determine malfunctions in electrical systems, equipment and controls using testing equipment such as test lights, ohmmeters, ammeters, voltmeters and oscilloscopes.
Perform routine preventive maintenance on electrical systems, equipment and machinery, such as inspecting controls, switchers, meters, fuses, wires, motors, generators and transformers.
Review blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics to determine the location of wiring, electrical devices and equipment in order to ensure compliance with code and safety requirements.
Calculate the load capacity of electrical wiring and equipment to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components.
Perform general service activities that may include but are not limited to: Pick-up/delivery and/or movement of fixed assets (furniture) and requisitioned supplies and materials.
Perform scheduled fire drills in buildings and clear/reset fire panels and inspect fire extinguishers monthly.
Caulking, weather stripping installation, and fiberglass insulation installation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the theories and principles of electricity;
Knowledge of the methods, materials, techniques and principles used in routine electrical installation, repair, testing and maintenance of electrical equipment, systems and control devices;
Knowledge of applicable National and State electric codes, laws, regulations and standards;
Knowledge of the hazards of and precautions required in the safe operation of electrical systems and equipment;
Knowledge of the safe use and operation of testing equipment such as test lights, ohmmeters, ammeters, voltmeters and oscilloscopes;
Skill in performing routine preventive maintenance on electrical systems including high-voltage service, equipment and machinery;
Skill in the safe use and maintenance of manual and power tools and testing equipment;
Ability to review and understand blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics;
Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations;
Ability to comprehend and follow instructions and directions;
Ability to prepare sketches, diagrams and specifications;
Ability to complete and maintain work orders, maintenance and repair logs and other forms.
Education: Completion of the eighth grade.
Experience: Four years of experience installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and control devices at commercial or residential buildings or other facilities.
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience as described on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school or other vocational or technical school with a concentration in electricity for three years of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience as a non-commissioned officer in construction electrician classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the installation and repair of electrical systems, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24-hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
2. Employees in this classification who are designated as Level I or Level II employees shall attend and successfully complete the appropriate asbestos safety and health training as required by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22.
3. Employees must be willing to learn American Sign Language.
4. New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568.)
5. This position is designated as Essential Employee. Successful candidate must be willing and able to come to work in emergency situations.
