Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist in hydrogeological and hydrological studies of the groundwater and surface-water resources of the State. Duties will include field and office work, and may include but are not limited to measuring water levels in wells, monitoring test drilling, collecting and describing drill cuttings and cores, conducting and analyzing aquifer tests, inventorying wells, collecting water samples, analyzing water-quality, water-level, and other hydrogeological data, working with GIS applications, digitizing and scanning data, compiling tables and plots of groundwater levels and water quality, and assisting in the production of reports, pamphlets, and brochures for both technical and non-technical audiences. The position involves interacting with technical professionals at local, state, and federal agencies as well as the public. Field work often requires travel throughout the State and may require the ability to lift heavy equipment (exceeding 50 pounds).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.

Experience: One year of experience performing professional geological work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science for the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Coursework in hydrogeology

Experience using common hydrogeological tools and field methods, such as water-level measuring devices (pressure transducers, electric tapes, steel tape), aquifer testing, test-well drilling and logging, basic water quality-equipment (pH, specific conductance, and temperature meters) and methods (sample collection, preservation, and processing)

Experience working on projects related to natural resources

Coursework or experience working with Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS)

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. When assigned to an environmental program at the Maryland Department of the Environment, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment, such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
