Main Purpose of Job
MDH Microbiology has received federal grant funding to establish and maintain an Emerging Infectious Pathogens microbiology laboratory that collects specified bacterial isolates from hospitals in Maryland and process these isolates for analysis. Upon receipt of a bacterial isolate, this position will verify the associated patient data, confirm the identification of the bacterial using a variety of FDA-approved methodologies, and freeze the isolates in replicate for storage in a repository. This position will also package and ship isolates, in compliance with federal shipping requirements, to specific laboratories for additional studies, including antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST). This position may also participate as a team member in antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) for both Carbapenemase Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and N. gonorrhoeae bacterial isolates, as well as any future projects specified by the CDC as a required function of MDH's Antimicrobial Resistance Laboratory Network laboratory. This position may also be trained and is expected to perform other laboratory assays that are routinely performed as part of MDH's mission to its clients which may involve bacteriology, parasitology and mycology, and AST. In this position all testing will be performed in accordance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) regulations, as well as the Code of Maryland (COMAR) regulations for samples/specimens submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland and the environment.
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Two years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or two years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.
Note: 1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
