Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust, an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking a Horticulturist for the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland.  JPPM, the State Museum of Archaeology and a center for both regional and statewide archaeological research, features a Visitors Center, a reconstructed Indian Village, the historic Point Farm House and Garden, a series of self-guided trails and various school and public education programs and events.

Main Purpose of Job

The Horticulturist will oversee and provide maintenance, improvement and repair of the grounds, historic landscapes and assigned sections of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM) as well as have responsibility for horticulture planning, design, and overall appearance of the Park. The position will also create interpretive programming of the gardens and landscape and develop/lead workshops, tours, and other educational programs. In addition, this position will coordinate with JPPM's maintenance department and Critical Areas Commission representatives to promote environmental sustainability and preventative landscape maintenance at JPPM.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsible for planning, designing, purchasing, planting, and maintenance of display gardens, exhibits and other related areas

Ensure garden projects, plans, designs and plant acquisitions align with the Park’s mission, interpretive priorities, and aesthetic goals

Prepare funding proposals for horticultural projects.

Train volunteers to perform maintenance and special work assignments;

Maintain plant collections information, generate accession and display labels for plant specimens in JPPM collection

Observe and document plant health for possible signs of insects or diseases

Operate machinery and hand equipment needed to maintain gardens and park landscape

Make recommendations for and implement programs to remove excessive invasive plants

Determine plant growing conditions and set planting and care schedules

Coordinate and promote environment efforts and sustainability practices with Critical Area commission representatives

Coordinate with the Maintenance department to make facilities-related improvements on the grounds and ensure guest safety at all times

Create interpretive materials for gardens and landscape, develop/lead workshops, tours of the gardens and other educational programs

Report as emergency personnel for situations such as snow removal and storm damage

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: BS degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology, Landscape Architecture or related field.

Experience: Three years of horticulture experience

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Our preferred candidate will have:

- One year of experience working with historic landscapes
- Experience creating garden designs and public programs
- Experience working in a botanical garden

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Maryland Pesticide Operator’s License, or the ability to acquire same within 9 months of hire.
