Oakland, MD (Garrett County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Ranger positions at Wolf Den Run State Park in Garrett County. Daily tasks include but are not limited to the following: general park operations including providing information to visitors, advising the general public of park rules and regulations, opening/closing of areas and gates, picking up litter, vehicle and equipment upkeep and record keeping, operate ORVs, trail maintenance, report writing, cleaning and maintaining public restrooms and other public buildings, use of communication radios, maintenance tasks, and other duties as assigned. Applicants must have the ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Selected candidates must adhere to all State and Federal laws, safety regulations, and must understand and adhere to all park policies. Candidates must be able to lift 50lbs., hike trails of varying difficulty, and be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The shift hours for this position vary; examples of shift hours include 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Weekly hours will vary seasonally. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Basic computer operation skills. 

Note: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education or experience in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences, or a natural resources related field is preferred.   

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland and a good driving record are required.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
