Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Fishing and Boating Services Unit is currently accepting applications for two full-time seasonal contractual Painter positions. One position will be based at DNR Crisfield Marine Terminal in Somerset County, and one position will be based at DNR Matapeake Marine Terminal in Queen Anne's County. Applicants must indicate on the supplemental questionnaire the position/location of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please read the main purpose of each job before applying.

Painter (DNR Crisfield Marine Terminal)
The incumbent will serve aboard the State vessel J. M. Tawes performing maintenance on the vessel and assisting with the retrieving and placement of navigational and regulatory buoys and/or markers. Duties include but not limited to: cleaning, painting and repairing of existing buoys or the preparation for new buoys; labeling buoys with the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard approved colors and verbiage; facilitating the pouring and finishing of concrete buoy weights; assisting the Maintenance Chief for the maintenance requirements of the vessel; operating various vehicles to transport buoys, unload weights, stocks buoy and other supplies. Position may be required to work on weekends and holidays and subject to on call 24 hours a day.

Painter (DNR Matapeake Marine Terminal)
The incumbent will perform maintenance on navigational and regulatory buoys and/or markers. Duties include but not limited to: cleaning, painting and repairing of existing buoys or the preparation for new buoys; labeling buoys with the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard approved colors and verbiage; facilitating the pouring and finishing of concrete buoy weights; assisting the Maintenance Chief with maintenance requirements of the facility; operating various vehicles to transport buoys, unload weights, stocks buoy and other supplies. Position may be required to work on weekends and holidays and subject to on call 24 hours a day. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience in painting work.

Notes: 

1. Additional painting experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required education.

2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a concentration in painting may be substituted for up to three years of the required painting experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Painters, Construction and Maintenance classifications or Painters, Construction and Maintenance specialty codes in the Painting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
