LOCATION OF POSITION

Savage River State Forest; Grantsville, MD (Garrett County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for two (2) Maintenance Assistant positions at Savage River State Forest, Grantsville (Garrett County), Maryland. These positions are responsible for the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment of the State Forest. The work entails independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including heavy equipment operation for road and trail maintenance, routine construction work, campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventative maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Other duties may include but are not limited to: operating both small and heavy equipment, planting trees, monitoring two Off-Road Vehicle Trails, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects, wildland fire suppression and boundary line maintenance. The selected candidates may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are preferred:

-Completion of the eighth grade.
-Experience operating small equipment such as skid steer, lawn mowers, chainsaws.
-Ability to operate heavy equipment such as front-end loader, dozer, tractor, radial arm brush hog.
-Knowledge of Savage River State Forest.
-Class B Commercial Driver’s License; however, on the job training is available to enable an employee to obtain this license.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
