Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Communications Coordinator within its Division of Marketing and Communications.

The World Trade Center - 401 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, Maryland  21202

Main Purpose of Job

This primary purpose of this position is to work closely with the agency's Secretary's office to prepare briefings for the Secretary, Deputy Secretary and senior leadership for upcoming events.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsibilities include researching and distributing daily news clips and rural news clips; updating the Department’s online events calendar; and preparing content and announcements for the MyCommerce Intranet. The incumbent will also contribute articles to the Department’s blog MDBizNews blog; monitor statewide business news and partner agencies to create content for social media outlets; draft press releases on Department news; and assist with internal and external (non-trade show) events and special projects.

The selected candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills and maintain effective working relationships; excellent oral and written communication skills;  the ability to manage multiple deadlines; work independently; handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects; and be well organized with a proven track record of working well under pressure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with at least 30 semester credit hours in one or more of the following subjects: English, journalism, public relations, writing or other similar and related courses.

Experience: Three years experience in public information, public relations, journalism or other related experience in publicity or promotional work.

Note:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience as described above for the required college education on a year-for year basis.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in public affairs classification or public affairs specialty codes in the information and arts field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Professional writing experience as a news reporter or public relations/public affairs professional.

Excellent English usage and grammar.

Excellent business writing.

Project management skills.

Knowledge and experience in monitoring media and public relations trends.

Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software
